How Much!? - China is spending $220bn on it's HST Network.

According to The NYT (New York Times), China is to construct 10,000 miles of new High Speed Railway track at a cost of $220bn dollars (£147bn) in the next 10 Years. Much of this is already under construction Beijing spends it's war chest in defiance of the global credit crunch.

Here in the UK, prolonged political discussions about building a London to Scotland HST route is bogged down with little or nothing in the past 2 years of Lord Adonis' tenure. Despite the route being no more that ~500 miles and estimated at ~£12bn, there remains no commitment even with regards to an election pledge.
